Rainbow Hair Bows
This past summer my husband's family had a reunion. One night us girls got together and learned how to make hair bows and headbands from my sister-in-law. Hair bows are quick and easy; you just need a little ribbon and some metal clips. And a hot glue gun. I taught a class on them for my church this past winter. I ordered a box of them online; they are much cheaper that way.
But we only used about half of them for the class. So, I have lots and lots of clips left. We bought some rainbow ribbon when my daughter planned her rainbow dress, and I decided to whip up a couple matching hair bows.
For each bow, cut
6.5 inch long piece of your thick ribbon (1.5 inch wide ribbon)
1.5 inch piece of your thin ribbon (5/8 inch wide ribbon)
4 inch piece of your thin ribbon
1. Clip a "V" from one end of your thick ribbon (if you have ribbon, like a rainbow, that is directional, make sure you cut your "V" in opposite ends).
2. Use a lighter to melt the ends of your ribbon pieces.
3. Measure an inch in from the "V" end of your thick ribbon, and mark. Fold the other end to the inch mark. Crease the middle with your fingernail.
4. Put a thin line of hot glue just to the side of the fold line (the side closer to your straight end) and press the end of the ribbon into it. Make sure it does not cross the center fold.
5. Make another thin line of hot glue just to the other side of the fold, and press in the ribbon at the one inch mark.
6. Now to cinch the center of the bow. Place a small dab of hot glue in the center of the bow, and press the long sides together. Flip it over, and glue and press the sides back down.
7. Place a dab of glue on the bottom of the bow, and press one end of the shortest piece of ribbon into it. Wrap the piece around the bow and secure it with more glue.
8. Glue the last piece of ribbon to the metal clip. Starting on the bottom of the clip (the straight piece), glue the ribbon to the handle.
9. Wrap the ribbon around the open clip end, and glue along the top.
10. Glue the ribbon to the inside of the top piece, ending at the spring.
11. Attach the bow to the clip.
You're done!
